When we train youngsters to plan and navigate their own routes for the Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition, we encourage them to keep coming back to these four key questions:

1. Where am I starting from?
2. Where do I want to get to?
3. How do I plan to get there?
4. How will I check I’m on the right route?
